Perspectives of solar energy development in Ukraine. Manufacturers
Seminar "Perspective of Solar Energy Use in the South of Ukraine" took place on April 24-28 2002 in the premises of
Odessa Oblast Council. Representatives of Berlin Senate, Odessa Oblast Council and Galati Council participated in
the seminar.
Seminar attended representatives of German companies, specialized in selling and assembling of solar collectors and
representatives of German companies GTZ, OBMT, Bayarisches Haus which currently operate in the Ukrainian market and
are interested in cooperation in the field of solar energy development in Ukraine.
Ukrainian section of the seminar was represented by a wide circle of manufacturing companies, energy-saving organizations,
various research institutions and universities.
A large number of mass media reported about the seminar
The issues of state-of-the-art solar collectors application in European countries and, in particular, in the South of Ukraine
were widely discussed in the course of the seminar. Some of the lecturers made their seminar presentations available to Solar
Energy Centre. These presentations are available on request.
Tacis Project Team provided European participants with all the information requested by the latter and organized meetings with
Ukrainian assembling and servicing companies.
Representatives of Ukrainian companies, among them Odessa Ammonia Plant, StalMetiz Plant, manufacturing company "Sintep" were
informed about German market of solar collectors and solar energy systems.
In the course of the seminar a tour to sanatorium "Rossiya" was organized to demonstrate the site for the demonstration object
which is being created in the framework of the Tacis Project "Creation of a Centre for Solar Energy Use in Odessa". The
demonstration object will represent a real example of practical use of solar energy in the region.
Besides that, sanatorium "Rossiya" plays the role of a pioneer of solar energy use in the recreational sphere. Primitive
collectors, made by the technical specialists of the sanatorium are currently use for hot water supply in one of the sanatorium
buildings.
Mr. Dorian Otrocol, Vice-President of Galati County Council made a report on status quo of solar energy industry in Romania
and perspective of its development. A special emphasis was made on the issue of technical, manufactural and research cooperation
between South of Ukraine and Danube regions of Romania.
Main outcomes of the international seminar are the following:
1. Public awareness of Odessa Solar Energy Centre's activities increased significantly. Appearance on the international scene.
2. Establishment of business contacts between European and Ukrainian companies.
3. Conclusion of the contract on equipment supply for the demonstration object to be created in the framework of Tacis prioject "Creation of the Centre for Solar Energy Use in Odessa"
4. Information exchange.
5. Extensive publicity in various mass media.
6. Growth of public interest to the issue of solar energy development in the region.

Perspectives of solar energy development in Ukraine. Users
As part of the Tacis programme, under the aegis of the recently established Solar Energy Centre in Odesa,
a seminar on "Prospects for Solar Energy Development in Southern Ukraine" was held on 25-27 September at
the indoors of Odesa Regional Council.
The Solar Energy Centre was established with the aim of developing alternative energy sources-particularly
solar energy-in the Black Sea and Danube basin region. The Centre conducts training and demonstrations on
solar energy usage. In addition, by disseminating information, it facilitates the development of business
initiatives and the creation of a market for solar equipment.
At this stage, many Ukrainian enterprises are already using solar energy, primarily for heating water. This kind of
equipment has been installed at the Odesa Priportovy Plant as well as in several sanatoriums and at the distillery.
However, solar energy could be more widely used-for heating residential premises, generating electricity, etc.
Development prospects for these areas were discussed during the seminar.
Among the seminar participants were nearly 30 representatives of enterprises and organisations involved in the installation,
distribution, and usage of solar equipment, representatives of Odessa Oblast Council and Berlin Energy Agency. Participants
were acquainted with already operating facilities, visited the centre's demonstration site, and also received information
on the experience of European countries in using solar energy.
In the course of the seminar several operating solar energy installations were visited by the seminar participants.
These installations are located in Odessa region and represent examples of solar collectors use for various purposes.
The brightest example, reflecting the use of solar collectors in Odessa region, turned out to be Trade Port "Yuzhny",
where solar collectors were installed for hot water supply. This system comprises 6 flat solar collectors, produced
by a Ukrainian company "New Technologies". In spite of the overcast day and unsatisfacotry condition of solar collectors
(dusty and cracked glass), temperature of hot water heated by the system was reaching 30-40 C.
The system, presented on this picture, was installed on the building of Energy Management Department of Port "Yuzhny"
by "New Technologies" company in 1999 and is based on the flat aluminum solar collectors CK-1.1. type. Solar heat
receiver's area of every system is 12 square meters and daily output is 1 cubic meter of hot water.
At present solar energy sytems are installed and operating in large ports and manufacturing companies of Southern Ukraine,
such as Port "Yuzhny", Odessa Trade Port, Feodosiya Trade Port, Odessa Liqueur Plant and other companies. For the time being
some of these systems became outdated and require more careful maintenance. Nethertheless it is important to emphasize the
growth of business actrivity in solar energy field of Odessa region.
